We are delighted to share the success of the first edition of the Gulf of Guinea Ocean Sciences Summer School (GGOSSS 2025), held at the University of Dschang, Cameroon, from August 25–29, 2025. This landmark event gathered 36 trainees and 12 instructors from six francophone Gulf of Guinea countries—Cameroon, Benin, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Congo, and Senegal—for a week of intensive training, exchange, and collaboration.

The program opened with a memorable ceremony, featuring inspiring remarks from University of Dschang leaders and partners, underscoring the importance of building scientific capacity to safeguard the Gulf of Guinea’s marine environment.

Over the course of the week, participants engaged in lectures, workshops, and thematic sessions covering key areas of ocean science:

  • Fundamentals of Oceanography – circulation, currents, and climate interactions

  • Marine Biogeochemistry & Coastal Ecosystems

  • In-situ and Remote Sensing Observations – including ADCPs, CTDs, drifters, and satellites like SWOT

  • Numerical Modeling with CROCO and regional applications

  • Python Training for data analysis and visualization

Hands-on workshops enabled participants to specialize in three tracks: in-situ measurements, remote sensing, and numerical modeling. A highlight of the program was the field excursion, where students applied techniques learned in class to real-world data collection and analysis.

Beyond science, GGOSSS 2025 featured career-building and policy discussions. Experts addressed maritime security challenges, pathways for project development and funding, and the integration of artificial intelligence into ocean sciences.

The event not only strengthened technical expertise but also fostered a network of emerging ocean scientists committed to addressing pressing environmental challenges in the Gulf of Guinea.

We extend heartfelt thanks to our partners, organizers, and trainees who made this inaugural edition a resounding success. Together, we are building the foundation for a new generation of ocean science leaders in West and Central Africa.
